The bay, the island and the cliffs

Portichol is the Spanish spelling. The town writes it Portitxol, in Valencian. The bay lies between Cap Prim to the north and Cap Negre to the south, with the Portitxol island about 300 metres off the shore, protected as a site of cultural interest since 2018. The cove, Cala Barraca or the Portitxol, is about 900 metres of gravel, boulders and rock, with a restaurant, and it is busy in summer. North of Cap Prim, Cala Sardinera is a small, quiet cove reached only on foot from the Creu del Portitxol viewpoint. The coast changes along the bay. In the north the cliffs are low, of grey and yellow marl and clay. At Cap Negre they turn to limestone and rise as high walls over the sea, with pine woods above. The town has five official viewpoints on this stretch alone, from the Creu del Portitxol to Cap de la Nau, and they show what the houses above them look over.

Balcón al Mar, on the high ground

Balcón al Mar covers the headland south of the bay, towards Cap de la Nau, the easternmost point of the Valencian coast. On the official IGN maps the lighthouse stands within it, about 122 metres above the sea. Most of the area lies between about 50 and 165 metres. The ground falls away in every direction, so the orientation, the view and the shelter from the wind change from one street to the next: one house looks north over the bay to Cap de Sant Antoni, another east to the open sea. Most homes here are detached villas on their own plots. Two roads serve the area: the Carretera del Portitxol from the hills behind the Arenal, and the Cabo de la Nao road through Costa Nova. In December 2020 the town's water company put the renewal of the supply pipes in Ambolo and Balcón al Mar out to tender.

Living here, summer and winter

This is a residential area at the end of the road, quiet for most of the year, and you need a car. The nearest supermarket is at the roundabout where the Pla road meets the Portitxol road. The Arenal, the port and the old town are a drive away. In summer the coves draw visitors. In 2026 the town hall ran paid parking for the Portitxol cove, with 59 places on Calle Barraca, from June to early September, and closed the road to the cove with barriers once the car park was full. Close to the shore, the national coastal law adds a protection zone of 100 metres inland, or 20 metres where the land was already urban in 1988: no new homes may be built in it, and existing houses can be repaired and modernised but not enlarged. Is it Portichol or Portitxol?
Both. Portitxol is the Valencian spelling the town of Jávea uses for the bay, the cove and the island. Portichol is the Spanish spelling, and the one most property listings use.
Is it busy in summer?
The cove is. In 2026 the town hall charged for parking at the Portitxol cove from June to early September and closed the road down to it once the car park was full. The residential streets above stay quiet, but we check how the summer traffic reaches the house you are looking at.
